Book Review: Hermie, a Common Catepillar by Max Lucado

Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Publication Date: October 4, 2011

Hermie and Wormie, two characters who appear in numerous books from Max Lucado, star in this newly updated tale from Thomas Nelson. Both Hermie and Wormie are struggling with feeling common and wishing that God had made them more special - at least in their own eyes. As they meet numerous other characters and lament about the ways in which they seem lacking, God reminds them that he loves them and he's not done with them yet!

Children will no doubt enjoy looking at the colorful pictures and following the characters on their journey through the pages of this entertaining book. The author has brought to life an important message that children will easily relate to, about God's love for them, about how God has made them wonderful and unique and has a special plan for their lives. I even found myself challenged as I was reminded to be thankful for the many blessings God has given me, instead of comparing myself to what others have, just as Hermie and Wormie kept comparing themselves to the ant or the snail or other characters, and then found themselves lacking as a consequence. Trusting God that his plans are far beyond anything we can imagine is something any of us can struggle with at moments in our lives, and what better time to learn this lesson than as a child?

I highly recommend this book and give it 5 out of 5 stars, for providing an entertaining story that leaves young readers with such an important message of God's hand at work in their lives.
