I'm throwin' down the gauntlet: Christian romance authors, try to leave the "hunk" out of "hunky"

Now bear with me here readers. I have a bone to pick.

WHY OH WHY MUST EVERY MALE HERO IN BOOKS BE DROP-DEAD GORGEOUS?

I certainly understand that the average reader of romance, being of the female persuasion, desires to read about a man with washboard abs, rippling muscles, strong and masculine features, and legs like a gigantic Redwood Tree. They want him to be brawny but brainy, brave but...okay, I'm out of "b" words.

They want the man on the left, not the man on the right:

But couldn't, once in awhile, the object of the female character's affection just be, you know, normal looking? Perhaps a love handle or two? Plain features? Minuscule muscles? Occasionally have bad breath? Still created by God and therefore is worthy of love and romantic admiration?

So I'm throwing down the gauntlet.

I hereby challenge the current popular Christian authors of romance to write a book, in the next year, that features plain looking people who fall in love.

Lets see if it doesn't sell just as well as a book featuring the hottest man or woman God has ever created.....

  1. LOL! Agree. Reading about normal people would be nice for a change. :-)

  2. Thanks for posting this, Jeremy, it would be nice to read about regular people in these romance books. Here's hoping that the authors take your challenge and end up writing another great story with characters the rest of us can relate to :)
