The second installment in the Texas Gold Collection held me in its grip from start to finish! "Where Rivers Part" is a moving tale that takes a look at what can happen when the greed of a corporation leads to the tragic loss of lives. I've never before read a story about what can happen when food safety is compromised and an outbreak occurs, and I can say that I have a new appreciation for the unseen work that happens to make sure the food we eat and the water we drink is safe for consumption! Gilbert expertly wove together the drama of the conspiracy Juliet uncovers with deeply personal scenes that examine her rocky relationship with her dad and the scars she has from their past. Juliet's desire to earn his approval and her actions in response had me wondering how often we all act in similar ways, seeking the approval of the world around us instead of looking to God for his hand of affection. As a father myself, I think my favourite scenes in this story were the ones leading to reconciliation between Juliet and her dad, and I can only pray that readers experiencing similar strained relationships will experience the sort of healing that happens here. Gilbert realistically portrays how difficult it can be to work through the past and find a new future together, but she also shines the light of hope on these situations to reveal that with God this truly is possible.
Gilbert is a strong addition to the genre of contemporary fiction, with engaging characters, emotionally charged writing, and spiritual themes that will leave you examining your own faith. I certainly look forward to her next novel in the "Texas Gold" series! I give this novel a solid rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
