about the book....

It was a well-laid plan--but it wasn't her plan . . .

It's all her grandmother's fault. For the last few months, Abigail Stoltzfus has helped her father with his genealogical research, hoping that breaking through a client's brick wall would also break his melancholy. But now her intrusive grandmother has set her sights on marrying off Abigail and insists she come to Stoney Ridge, where there is a plethora of eligible bachelors.

Except that Mammi is mistaken. There are no eligible bachelors in Stoney Ridge, barring one, and he's all wrong. Dane Glick has the wrong last name and the wrong relatives--including the bishop who is at odds over a church matter with Abigail's uncle, minister David Stoltzfus.

As the conflict grows, setting family against family, it's becoming clear that the path to a solution may lead to a Quieting--a removal of a church leader. But for which one? And when Abigail stumbles onto a curious connection during her genealogical research, it could help David solve one problem--but will it create another?

my review....

Like the first book in The Bishop's Family novels (The Imposter), the second installment in the series finds Suzanne Woods Fisher in fine form! I enjoyed every moment of "The Quieting", from becoming reconnected to the characters I grew to care about in The Imposter, to the new and lovable character of Abigail Stolzfus. The novel is crafted with solid pacing, and I simply couldn't get enough of this story as I devoured chapter after chapter! I think what most struck me in this book is how seriously the Amish take the issue of sin in leadership, as I fear that too often today in evangelical churches, members may just look the other way in a situation like what David's church finds themselves in, dishonouring God and his word in the process. David's obedience is to be admired, and the result of the "quieting" was precious to behold. In the midst of the serious issues dealt with in the book, Abigail added much enjoyed humour with her straight forward ways where she just says it the way it is. As she and Dane danced around the possibility of a relationship, I found myself rooting for them to find love. Dane's ability to be positive and to see the gem hidden beneath Abby's sometimes offensive exterior is to be admired! But out of all of the great moments in the book, it is the growth of David over the course of this story when he finds the courage to stand up for truth that I most appreciated. I can't wait to see what lies next for David in the coming book in the series!

I was reluctant to turn the final pages of this book because I so enjoyed spending time with the entire cast of characters featured in this book. I award "The Quieting" a high rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars and encourage you to grab a copy for yourself.
