about the book....

Esther Larsen, a top risk analyst at one of the country's largest banking institutions, is becoming more and more convinced that she has uncovered a ticking bomb with the potential to make the 2008 market crash look minor by comparison. And as her own employer pursues "investment" strategies with ever-increasing levels of risk, she becomes convinced she must do something. But Esther is only one person; can she stand up to an international conspiracy of greed? And if she does, will anyone take her seriously?

Every moment of indecision edges the markets closer to a tipping point--the teetering first domino in a standing row that circles the globe. And when Esther finds her voice, those she seeks to expose will not sit idly by. With global markets on the brink, and her own life in danger, Esther is locked in a race against the clock to avert a financial tsunami that threatens worldwide devastation.

my review....

One thought lay on my mind as I closed the covers of Davis Bunn's latest suspense novel: "Please Lord, let this stay fiction!" At times I wasn't sure if I was reading a novel or whether I was watching reality unfold, because the plot seems ripped right from the headlines. I couldn't put it down for a single moment! An ominous undertone pervades the book as the plot proceeds, and not just because the primary character Esther soon finds herself in the crosshairs of very powerful people who are seeking to end her life. Rather, it is the fragile global economy that seems about to implode, and the novel captures the impression that the common people today have around the world, that though things seem well on the surface, something is not right. And, indeed, it seems like society learned nothing from the financial crisis of 2008, but that the greed of humanity continues to plunge us towards an uncertain economic future!  What I most appreciate about this novel is that it is not one of those novels that leaves you with a feeling of gloom about life in general. Rather, it offers us a glimpse of what might be, a reminder that God is in control and that his people can push back against the forces of evil, and good can prevail. Bunn has, once again, done a great job at fleshing out likeable and relate-able characters, characters with struggles and flaws and doubts, yet ones that are heroic in their willingness to step up to their calling no matter the cost. Our world desperately needs the Esther's of this world to take their place on the stage of history and play their role, no matter how small or how significant that may be. Might you or I be the Esther our generations are waiting for?

I step away from this novel feeling cautious about the financial world around me, but also prayerful that in reality God is going to bring good out of whatever the future holds. I highly recommend this powerfully written, engaging novel, and guarantee that this is one book you do not want to miss! I award it 5 out of 5 stars.
