A smashing good mystery! My review of "Murder on the Moor" by Julianna Deering

about the book....

The rolling, frigid mists that creep in over the Yorkshire Moors hide a mystery as challenging as Drew has ever faced

At the urgent request of an old school friend, Drew and Madeline Farthering come to Bloodworth Park Lodge in the midst of the Yorkshire moors, a place as moody and mysterious as a Brontë hero. There have been several worrisome incidents around those lonesome rolling hills--property desecrated, fires started, sheep and cattle scattered. Worst of all, the vicar has been found dead on the steps of the church, a crime for which Drew can discern no motive at all.

Few in the town of Bunting's Nest seem like suspects, and Drew can't keep his suspicions from falling on his friend's new bride. Do her affections lie more with her husband's money and estate, while her romantic interests stray to their fiery Welsh gamekeeper? As the danger grows ever closer, it's up to Drew to look past his own prejudices, determine what's really going on, and find the killer before it's too late.

my review...

Once again, Julianna Deering has served up a smashing good mystery in her latest, "Murder on the Moor". In fact, it was so good that I felt like I was reading one of my favorite authors, Agatha Christie. I enjoyed the different location featured in this book, where Drew and Madeline travel to the Yorkshire moors, rather than the mystery taking place at or near to Farthering Place in Hampshire. And the author succeeded at sending my suspicious mind in a number of different directions as to "who done it?", with plenty of villains to choose from. I think what I most loved about this book is the way that the author depicts Drew and Madeline's marriage, as one filled with many fun moments and splashes of humor, with a true partnership where they respect each other's gifts and work together to uncover the truth. Drew's humility at the end of the book (I won't say more as I don't want to give anything away) is also endearing to read about. For me, it serves as a reminder that as we all seek to walk like Christ, those moments of saying sorry can often go a long way in mending hurts and bringing God's kingdom to a hurting world. And as far as the character of Drew is concerned, I of course can't help but like the bloke all the more for his actions! If I were somehow to be transported into the pages of this book, I'm certain we'd be fast friends indeed and that I'd soon be joining those two lovebirds in solving mysteries!

What else can I say but move over, Agatha Christie! Fans of mystery novels set in the past are going to love this book. For those readers who are already determined to get their hands on anything Deering offers up, they should plan on grabbing a copy of this book post haste! The writing is crisp, the characters are more endearing than ever, and you will have great fun sifting through the clues to find out who the culprit is!

Julianna Deering just keeps getting better and better. I award this novel 4.5 out of 5 stars.
