about the book....

When You Stare Into the Abyss It Also Stares Into You

The bullet that rips into Cole "Tox" Russell was never meant to kill. It was meant to send a message. Only one man is skilled enough to have taken the shot, a rogue Special Forces operator who vanished months ago.

Alec King is perhaps the only person as skilled as Tox, and he's out for justice. Furious with orders that got his men killed, he intends to make those responsible pay. And he insists Tox join him, believing they are the same breed of soldier.

Afraid his old friend could be right, Tox battles a growing darkness within himself as he and his team are forced into another deadly encounter with antiquity. It appears Alec is harnessing the power of a mysterious artifact, a crown that history has linked to some of the worst slaughters in humanity. Racing to stop Alec before his vengeance is unleashed, Tox must fight the monster without becoming one.

my review....

Readers craving a suspense-filled novel with heroic characters, supernatural overtones, and adventure-infused scenes will find all that and more in Ronie Kendig's latest novel "Crown of Souls". Literally one sentence into the story and I was hooked (I love it when that happens!) and I can vouch for the fact that this book doesn't let up for a moment. Although the majority of the story takes place in present time, the author has woven in moments from the 1100's as well, and I love this glimpse into the past and the way it gave an even richer depth to the mysterious events of the present. Tox and Haven both experience growth in their characters over the course of the story, but it is Tox who was particularly intriguing to me as he faced down the darkness of his past and his fears about the very essence of who he is. So many of us can wrestle with accepting who we are and how to deal with the not-so-pleasant side of ourselves, and this story highlights the importance of allowing others to speak into our lives and speak truth to the lies we can embrace.

I should note that this book could be read as a stand alone novel as you will quickly get up to speed in terms of what is going on with Tox and his team. But why would you want to start with the second book in the series? You are not going to want to miss one moment "The Tox Files" series - take my word for it!

"Crown of Soles" is one fantastic ride, and I have no doubt that Kendig is going to continue to win new fans with each person who picks up this novel.  I award this book a high rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.
